Sunday Macedonia's capital Skopje was site to a second day of violent feuds between ethnic Macedonians and Albanians that centered around the building of a church in Skopsko Kale.

Ethnic Albanians have opposed the construction of the Christian temple in the Kale, which is Skopje's old fortress, saying this is an insult to their minority.

As reported by allvoices.com, Christian Slavic Macedonians on their part have argued that there is no reason that the church be not built.

It is claimed that during the night between Thursday and Friday activist from the ethnic Albanian Democratic Union for Integration, including high-profile politicians, have actually demolished the building under construction.

This has provoked a rift in Macedonia's ruling coalition between PM Nikola Gruevski's VMRO-DPMNE and the Democratic Union.

Sunday protests were called by both supporters of the building and opposers, which resulted in violent clashes.

Sources have it that at least one policeman and six protesters have been injured, one of whom has been transported to hospital with stab wounds. Other protesters threw stones at each other.

PM Gruevski expressed outrage at the events, saying all violence has to be condemned and avoided.
