Antibiotics losing the fight against deadly bacteria

bakterija_0911Our last line of defence against bacterial infections is fast becoming weakened by a growing number of deadly strains that are resistant to even the strongest antibiotics, according to new figures given to The Independent on Sunday by the Health Protection Agency (HPA).

The disturbing statistics reveal an explosion in cases of super-resistant strains of bacteria such as E.coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, a cause of pneumonia and urinary tract infections, in less than five years.

Miracle cures from the age of Hippocrates

hipokrates_medicine_390From simple syrups, eye drops, balms and pills to suppositories combining a multitude of ingredients, pharmaceutics has been a precision science since antiquity.

Used through the ages to cure a vast variety of ailments and diseases, pharmaceutics has its roots in the combination of medicinal plants and roots. In fact, Hippocrates’ (ca 460 - ca 370 BC) writings mention at least 250 medicinal plants in his studies, while Galen of Pergamon (AD 129-199), the most accomplished of antiquity’s medical researchers, described in his so-called Galenic Formulations medicines that combine up to 100 different ingredients each.

Hundreds of herbal remedies now outlawed across Europe

Herbal-Remedies-for-Back-PainLive in Europe? Get your herbs while they last. New rules put forth by the European Union (EU) will ban the sale of certain herbal remedies that have been used for centuries.

Traditional herbs such a St. John's Wort or Echinacea must now meet strict licensing guidelines in order to be sold, while other lesser-known herbs that haven't been "traditionally" used in the last 30 years won't even make the cut to reach consumer shelves. Only those products that have been "assessed" by the Medicine and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) will be available for purchase. The real kicker? Even approved products will only be recommended for minor ailments such as the common cold, which means that product labeling may no longer be allowed to convey the potent health benefits of widely-used herbal remedies.

Does eating lots of salt really affect blood pressure?

The Health Benefits of Iodine For Thyroid Health

Thyroid_GlandFor years, it has been common medical knowledge that iodine has a clear and crucial relationship to the thyroid gland. And scientific research has supported this fact time and time again.

Historically, this critical link between iodine and thyroid health has been of key importance to governments and global health care organizations, as iodine deficiency is the single most common trigger for the incidence of preventable brain damage and retardation in children.

GM Cows Altered to Produce "Breast Milk"

world_cowThe scientists have successfully introduced human genes into 300 dairy cows to produce milk with the same properties as human breast milk.

Human milk contains high quantities of key nutrients that can help to boost the immune system of babies and reduce the risk of infections.

The scientists behind the research believe milk from herds of genetically modified cows could provide an alternative to human breast milk and formula milk for babies, which is often criticised as being an inferior substitute.

Supplements shown to help prevent effects of radiation fall-out

Herbal-Remedies-for-Back-PainAt publication, the nuclear emergency in Japan continues to worsen. Six reactors at Fukushima Daiichi #1 Plant are in danger of catastrophic meltdown. Of these six reactors four or five are now to have been storing 20 years worth of highly radioactive spent fuel rods outside of and directly above the containment buildings. Some of those fuel rods have already melted and are attacking the containment domes underneath. Those fuel-rod burns will – if unchecked – attack the tops or sides of the containment buildings housing the reactors themselves. The situation has far surpassed Three Mile Island and is now a Chernobyl in progress. But Chernobyl was only one reactor. There are six at Daiichi #1. And a catastrophic meltdown of Reactor #4 is imminent. One such event will likely make it impossible to save the other five reactors. No one knows yet what the result of six China Syndrome events would be in Japan and the mainstream refuses still to discuss the possibility (which we consider a likelihood) other than in the vaguest terms. -- MCR
