Greater Albanian Superleague

Albania and Kosova domestic football leagues have been struggling to rise in quality or spectator attendance to match their European counterparts even despite some financial and media support. The leagues are also having difficulty attracting good players, even home-bred players will jump to any chance of playing abroad.

Football experts have suggested the merger of Albania's Kategoria Superiore and Kosova's Raiffeisen Superliga. This merger would create one strong super-league. Bigger cities like Prishtina or Tirana would be inclined to reinforce and they would have suitable opponents to compete against. With these two countries continuing to play in separate leagues they will likely never become strong enough to progress on their own. Merger will give them that competitiveness they're missing.

Albania has always been on its own since the founding of its football federation but Kosova has memories of being part of Yugoslavian Football Federation. Prishtina knows the sweet taste of winning away games against the likes of Red Star Belgrade or Hajduk Split. Playing against opponents of higher caliber causes football clubs to transform and rise to a higher level.

So far the heads of bigger clubs in Albania and Kosova have agreed to idea of forming a joint league, but that step is more complex and requires work by both football federations.
