Palestinian Authority foreign minister counts "six or seven" votes for statehood in the Security Council:
The Palestinians are trying to win over Gabon, Nigeria and Bosnia-Herzegovina. The first, west-central African state seemed to have made up its mind to vote for the Palestinians, but the other two remained hesitant, Malki said.
This is a very traditional legislative situation. The Palestinians seem to see an advantage in naming countries they hope will vote with them, and trying to use public pressure -- there's no upside for, say, Nigeria's government in being seen as the one that killed statehood -- to bring countries aboard. The U.S. and its allies, for the same reason, aren't talking about their vote count.
But as in any legislative situation, unspecified claims -- and "six or seven" strikes me as a bit of a red flag in a careful count (which is it?) -- don't mean all that much and the reality of the reporting seems to be that the Palestinians don't, yet, have the votes locked down.
