Man dies from anthrax-contaminated heroin

A man died after injecting heroin contaminated with anthrax, sparking fears that a northern European outbreak has spread to England, officials said.
There have been seven other cases of anthrax among drug users since June -- one in Scotland, three in Germany, two in Denmark and one in France, The Daily Telegraph reported Friday.
The eighth and most recent case involved a man who died at a hospital in Blackpool after injecting anthrax-laced heroin.
Hamburg becomes first to legalize Muslim feast

Authorities in Hamburg have become the first in Germany to officially recognize Islamic holidays so Muslim employees and students can observe them at home.
The decision forms part of an agreement between the north German city and local Muslim groups. Similar agreements exist with Christian and Jewish communities in the city. Hamburg's mayor, Olaf Scholz, said on Aug. 14 that he hoped the deal would serve as an example for other German cities.
Authorities estimate some 150,000 Muslims live the city of almost 2 million people. The growing public presence of Islamic culture in Germany has sparked anger among conservatives and far-right groups.
Prophet depictions shown in mosque demos

BERLIN (AP) — Members of a small far-right group have displayed caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad during demonstrations outside mosques in Berlin, but officials say their protests have gone peacefully.
Saturday's demonstrations by the Pro Deutschland group — held under the slogan "Islam does not belong in Germany — stop Islamization" — followed a failed attempt by three mosques to get display of the caricatures prohibited. A court ruled they were protected by laws allowing artistic free expression.
Chinese destroyer enters Mediterranean via Suez

A Chinese destroyer sailed through Egypt's Suez Canal into the Mediterranean Sea, Egyptian daily Al-Shuruk reported on Sunday.
The destroyer could be on its way to the Syrian coast, the Egyptian newspaper reported, adding that the warship is planning to hold naval maneuvers in the area.
