A court in Bosnia-Hercegovina has sentenced a former Serb paramilitary commander to 45 years in prison for war crimes during the 1992-95 conflict in the Balkans. Veselin Vlahovic, known as the "Monster of Grbavica", was found guilty on more than 60 counts, including the murder, rape and torture of Bosnian Muslim and Croat civilians in Sarajevo.

The researchers are training the bees to help find landmines. The bees are trained by adding particles of TNT to sugar solution which leads the bees to identify the smell of explosives with the scent of food. The scientists hope that once the bees associate the smell of TNT with food they will help to locate explosives in landmines still buried in the ground. Estimates suggest there are at least 750 square kilometers (466 square miles) of uncleared mine fields left over from the 1990s Balkan wars.

The fable of the Indian king who wanted to thank his wise man who had created the game of chess told him to name his reward.

The wise man said all that he asked for was that for a grain of rice to be given to him for the first square, 2 for the second, 4 for the third, 8 for the fourth, 16 for the fifth...continuing to double each square to the 64th. The king thought it reasonable and agreed.

When it came to fulfilling this request he found that it was an impossibly high number (18,446,744,073,709,551,615) over 18 quintillion grains!!! Some estimates say a pile of rice bigger than Mount Everest. This tale is very instructive of the deceptive power and dangers of compound interest.

This is why throughout history there have been debt jubilees and methods to reset the system and so much opposition to usury and interest, particularly compound interest.

The rule of 72 is an easy way to work out how long it will take for an amount to double given an interest rate. 72 = (interest rate) x (years to double)

If 2,000 years ago someone had invested a penny or a cent (if they had been around then) at compound interest rate of 5% that would have doubled to 2 cents after 14.4 years and by today with compound interest would be over 1.3 trillion dollars by my rough calculations (1,374,389,534.72 dollars) as the sum doubles approximately every 14.4 years about 38 times.

The mind boggles at how destructive compound interest is and why it is allowed on such a scale.

The Israeli military is converging on Gaza, as it continues to pummel the Palestinians from air, sea and land. In July 2000, the WHO urgently appealed to the UN administration in Kosovo to close their three Roma (Gypsy) IDP (internally displaced peoples) camps in the Mitrovica area because they had been built on highly toxic wasteland. More than six years later, the UN has still not evacuated these camps, nor sought medical treatment for the life-threatening lead levels in the blood of those living there. The International Committee of the Red Cross, Amnesty International, Society for Threatened Peoples, Refugees International (and many other humanitarian organizations) have demanded in writing to the UN the immediate evacuation of these three camps. This film encourages the international community to intervene. Unable to return home or obtain refugee status in a third country, these Gypsies remain trapped on toxic land where every child conceived will suffer irreversible brain damage.

This week Iran witnessed maybe one of the biggest international gatherings in its history. Representatives from more than 120 countries came for the 16th summit of the non-aligned-movement; movement that, after the United Nations, has the most members. Such a big event has warranted a lot of preparation on Iran's part. Iran's police have deployed 110 thousand security forces, and a lot of office buildings across the capital have been close for at least five days. In the run up to the NAM summit in Tehran western and Israeli media strove to downplay the significance of the event. Nevertheless state officials from more than 50 countries came to Tehran. Iran has been a member for 33 years but this is the first time it will be assuming the presidency of the Non-Aligned-Movement. Emine Erdogan accompanied Turkey’s Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu as he left on Wednesday to observe the situation in Rakhine where fighting between Buddhists and Rohingya Muslim has killed 80 people in June, according to official figures.

Mrs. Erdogan’s attempts to stop her tears with a tissue were futile, when a man speaking in the local Roghinya language made his anguish clear to Davutoglu not only through a translator but also through his loud cries, which compelled the foreign minister to hug him, and made her cry even more.
